What is Maskanoo?

While many countries around the world celebrate Boxing Day, there remains some debate over the holiday’s exact origin. One of the most widely held theories is that Boxing Day began as a British tradition in which servants were given the day off after working on Christmas.

Masters would often pack a box of Christmas leftovers for their servants to enjoy, hence the term “boxing.” Over the years, various countries have created their own unique Boxing Day traditions.

But few are as unique or exciting as Maskanoo, an annual Boxing Day festival found exclusively in TCI. Derived from a combination of colonial masquerades and the Caribbean tradition of Junkanoo, Maskanoo features a full day of cultural activities, including an elaborate parade.
