Blue seas. White sands. Homeless puppies? Turks and Caicos’ pristine beaches and quaint island experiences make it into many an Instagram photo, but the same can’t be said for the countless island puppies in need of a home. Beach Enclave invites you to vacation with a cause.
Through a brand new partnership with local rescue Potcake Place, Beach Enclave is on a mission to reduce the number of homeless puppies on Turks and Caicos. Each and every guest of Beach Enclave is invited to join Potcake Place in helping soon-to-be adopted puppies acclimate to home life.
Give back to Turks and Caicos through bettering the lives of these puppies, affectionately referred to as “potcake puppies” by island natives.
What is a Potcake Puppy?
Potcake puppies are a melting pot of breeds. A puppy’s exact breed isn’t always clear, but that only adds to their charm. Their smart, loyal, and loving personalities make them excellent companions for people of all walks of life, which is why Potcake Place has set their sights on adopting potcakes off the island.
Potcake puppies earned their name throughout the Bahamas and Turks & Caicos Islands from doting locals. Locals fed the caked remains of their cooking pots to these stray dogs, hence the name potcake. Over the years, these dogs have held a special place in the hearts of locals. The puppies often make an appearance in backyards and construction sites, or during tourists’ island adventures.
Who Is Potcake Place?
Potcake Place is a Turks & Caicos dog rescue charity dedicated to saving and adopting out potcake puppies. Located in the Grace Bay area of Providenciales, Potcake Place is a volunteer-run, non-profit organization. There are always more pups than people yet still plenty of love to go around as the dogs make their way from the streets into a loving home.
Potcake Place has successfully adopted out potcakes throughout North America and even other parts of the world. Potcakes now live everywhere from on the beach to in the snow. Because many of the rescue’s puppies have been fostered in volunteer’s homes, they’re often already used to living alongside children and other dogs.
How Can I Help?
Beach Enclave invites each and every one of its guests to make a difference in the life of a potcake puppy before they even set foot on the island. Leave an outfit or two behind and pack donations instead. Potcake Place is always in need of
items to support the puppies’ day-to-daycare. Old towels, laundry pods, fuzzy toys, and Esbilac puppy formula are always in high demand.
Guests can also lend a hand once their vacation comes to a close. Volunteer as a ‘courier’ for the charity. Potcake Place Couriers take puppies on flights out of the Providenciales airport. All guests need to do is carry the puppy onto the plane in a soft-sided bag, then hand the puppy over to its new owner at the destination airport. Because not all owners-to-be can visit Turks & Caicos, these volunteers are the final link between the potcake puppies and their new homes.
